Standards

Standards are referenced throughout the Ontario Fire Code.  It is important to understand that different versions of the standards are referenced.  For example, the Ontario Fire Code references NFPA 10 - Portable Fire Extinguishers but the reference is NFPA 10-2010 which calls all requirements in the 2010 version of the standard into the legislation and as a result all requirements of the 2010 version are fully enforceable by an inspector.

Beware when purchasing fire safety equipment requiring standards.  Purchasing off-shore equipment from a unknown source may result in false standard compliance as the item has not been approved for use in North America.  If you come across a item with suspect origin, contact NBFES, discontinue use and purchase a replacement from a reputable seller.
